CANOE / KAYAK

The characteristics of the Hockanum River are such that canoeists and kayakers can be found enjoying it during most seasons of the year. Following are pictures taken from several areas along the Hockanum River Linear Park trail.

> Since 2008 a canoe/kayak race has been held in early May, beginning at Labor Field at Woodlawn Circle and ending at the Two Rivers Magnet School on East River Drive, all in East Hartford.

This is a timed race with each boat going off at about 30 to 60 second intervals. There are 16 different classes of entries based on types of boats, adults or youth, etc. T -shirts will be awarded to the winners in each category. Funds benefit the environmental clean up efforts of the EHHRC maintaining hiking trails, along the river, and clear river passage year-round.

The Hockanum River race course is 6.0 miles downstream, through Scotland Road Pond, with mandatory portage and takeout, on the right, just past Scotland Road Causeway, out onto Goodwin Lane, across Church Street and back into the River from the parking lot just below the Old Mill at 87 Church Street.

The race course winds downstream, through East Hartford Lake, under Interstate - 84, under Main Street, Route 2 and out to the Connecticut River to FINISH at Goodwin College, 1 Riverside Dr. East Hartford, at the dock on the river. Location of race finish may be moved depending on flood conditions on race weekend.

Members of the PVRA Amateur Radio Club will be monitoring the race and progress of paddlers from 10 locations along the race course.

This race is sponsored by the East Hartford Parks and Recreation Department with supervision by the E.H.Police and Fire Departments.
